Havington, age 96, of 839 Bennie Road, Cortland, NY went home to be with his Lord and Savior on February 1, 2012. Walter was born June 16, 1915 at Duane, NY, the fifth son born to the late Charles E. Havington and Carrie Mae “Mamie” Johnson Havington. His parents purchased a farm in March of 1929 in Dryden, NY on State Route 38. Mr. Havington lived most of his life in the Dryden area. He was a 1933 graduate of Dryden High School where he earned a letter in soccer. He was a graduate of the I.C.S. Civil Engineering Course and the Columbia Technical Institute, Washington, D.C. He also completed special engineering work at Cornell.</p>
<p>Mr. Havington was a machine and tool designer for Edlund Machinery Co. (Monarch Machine Tool) of Cortland for 10 years before accepting a position with the Facilities Engineering Department of G.L.F. (Agway, Inc.) at their main office at Ithaca, NY. When the office was moved to DeWitt, NY in 1965 he continued there until retiring in 1972 with 22 years’ service as the supervisor of Preliminary Engineering, Planning, Design and Cost Estimating.</p>
<p>Walter was a member of the Dryden United Methodist Church for approximately 77 years and had been a member of the choir and orchestra, a Sunday School Teacher, Treasurer and Chairman of the board of trustees. He was also a member of Dryden Grange #1112 for over 80 years, serving through the various offices. He had served as Deputy Master of New York State Grange for Tompkins County and was a member of the National Grange. Walter has been a member of Dryden Lodge #390, I.O.O.F. for about 70 years and was a Past Noble Grand. Mr. Havington was a 58 year member of Dryden Lodge #472 F &amp; AM and also Washington Chapter #29 Royal Arch Masons at Homer, NY. He was a member of Dryden Township Historical Society and the Dryden Senior Citizens and a charter member of Dryden Village Zoning Board of Appeals.</p>
<p>Mr. Havington was thankful that he had been born and brought up on a farm. Even though he chose engineering as a career, he never lost his love of the farm. He had a special liking of animals and raised many varieties as hobbies over the years, including Norwegian Elkhound Dogs, Ranch Mink, Poultry, Registered Holstein Cattle, American Quarter Horses and Welsh Ponies. Mr. Havington loved music and played several instruments including violin, saxophone, clarinet and in later years, the electric organ. He had a woodworking shop and made innumerable items, including some violins and scale model airplanes including radio controlled scale models. In his younger years he was active in hunting and fishing especially in the Adirondacks that he was so fond of.</p>
<p>Walter is survived by a niece, Frances H. Dory of St. Petersburg, FL; a nephew, Charles (Gloria) Havington of Homer, NY; several great and great great nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Walter was predeceased by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Shaw Havington; his sister, Ellen (Martin) Tripp; four brothers, Andrew (Anna) Havington, Roy (Lillian) Havington, William (Marion) Havington and Howard (Marion) Havington.</p>

Pauline was born Jan. 13, 1924 in Ithaca, NY to the late Alvin and Anna Bush Burgess. She was graduated from Ithaca High School and the former Tompkins County Memorial Hospital of Nursing and worked at Lakeside Nursing Home and Ithaca Hospital for many years as a nurse. She loved to bake cakes and was a superior seamstress and a member of the United Methodist Church of Dryden and the Ladies Auxiliary of Dryden Township Post # 8158, Veterans of Foreign Wars. She She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and will be missed by her family and friends.</p>
<p>Pauline is survived by her son, Robert (Carol) Nase and her daughter, Janice (Glenn) Downey both of Dryden; a brother, Robert Burgess of Baldwinsville, NY; a sister, Eleanor Mastronardi of Takoma Park, MD; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Pauline was preceded in death by husbands Ralph Nase who died in 1962, and Richard Wurzel who died in 1995; her siblings, Archie (Beverly) Burgess, Donald (Evelyn) Burgess, Dorothy (Laurence) Myer and Florence (Lorenzo) Martin.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Glenn H. Burgess, 91, of Oakfield, an employee at Cornell University prior to his retirement, died Thursday (Jan. 26, 2012) at Genesee County Nursing Home in Batavia. Mr. Burgess was born Nov. 6, 1920, in Ithaca, a son of the late Karl and Ida (Smith) Burgess.</p>
<p>Glenn will be remembered by his family as having a tremendous sense of humor. Survivors include three children, Mildred (Richard) D’Alba of Oakfield, Glenna Burgess of Syracuse, and Tyrone Burgess of Waterbury, Conn.; three grandchildren, Rick (Shelly) D’Alba of Oakfield, Michael (Andria) D’Alba of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mark D’Alba of Rochester; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. His youngest sister, Betty (late Bill) Miller of Sarasota, Fla., also survives. Glenn is preceded in death by a sister, Mildred (late Lou) Barnard.</p>

<p>Born July 24, 1925 in Virgil, NY, she was the only daughter of the late Floyd D. and Harriet M. Martin MacGuinness. On July 28, 1945, she married Edward “Ned” Hayes, who died July 3, 1988. She was employed with the Cortland City School District at the Virgil Elementary School as the school secretary for many years. She was Past Treasurer and Past Marshall of the Dryden Chapter #250, Order of Eastern Star and was also a member of the Virgil PTO and Virgil Historical Society.</p>
<p>Evalyn is survived by her son, Martin F. (Victoria L. Coleman ) Hayes of St. Petersburg, FL; and daughter-in-law, Ellen J. Hayes of Cortland, NY; grandchildren, Lee Shaw of Liverpool, NY and Sean S. (Tricia) Hayes of Ithaca, NY, and a great-granddaughter, Emma Shaw. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her son, Gary E. Hayes; a great-granddaughter, Carrie Ann Shaw and brother, Leo H. MacGuinness.</p>

Mrs. Butler was born August 23, 1924 in Curtis, NY a daughter of the late Martin and Mildred Seeley Lanphere. On July 31, 1946 she was married to Thomas Finley Butler who passed away after 60 years of marriage on Dec. 16, 2006. She was employed at Ithaca College as the Supervisor of the Housekeeping Dept. and had previously been employed at Cornell. Laura was a member of and sang in the choir of the Varna United Methodist Church. She enjoyed many good times traveling and summering at the family cottage on Lake Como.</p>
<p>Survivors include her children, Wayne (Nanette) Butler of Trumansburg and Catherine E. Grover of Freeville; a brother, David Lanphere of Dolgeville, NY; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by the parents, her husband and a brother, Royce Lanphere.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Carol Simons Lira, 68, of 3754 Prospect Street, Truxton, N.Y. died on Wednesday January 18, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse. Born on January 13, 1944 in Cortland N.Y., Carol was the daughter of Lester and Olive Simons. The family lived in Dryden and then moved to Preble.</p>
<p>Carol is survived by her husband of 28 years Joaquin Lira, her son David (Samantha) Hobart of Douglas, Arizona; her mother Olive Coit of Cortland; sisters, Faye (Jerry) Butts of Harford, and LouAnne (Ronald Prosser) Simons of Homer; brothers, Randall Simons of Lamoine, Maine, Garry (Jeanette) Simons of Cortland and Danny (Roseanna) Simons of Homer; step-sons, Felipe Lira, and Joaquin (Maria Elena) Lira, of Eloy, Arizona and Nicolas (Zenayda) Lira of Casa Grande, Arizona; 12 Grandchildren; many wonderful Aunts, Uncles, Nieces and Nephews; many dear friends; her beloved doggie Shorty and her adorable kitties Hecate and Ruby. Carol was predeceased by her sons, John Eric Hobart, Phillip Hobart, Duane Hobart; her father Lester Simons and her, kitty Iris Inez.</p>
<p>Carol was looking forward to this summer’s reunion with her former classmates from Homer High School where she was a cheerleader and active in many clubs. Carol and Joaquin were co-Presidents of Phi Theta Kappa and earned their Associate of Arts degrees in May 2003 from Cochise College in Douglas, Arizona and Bachelor of Arts in Cultural Studies in June 2011 from Empire State College, Saratoga Springs, New York.</p>
<p>Carol’s life experience was truly inspirational. She was office manager for Bruce Babbitt when he was Arizona Attorney General and preparing to be Governor, worked with Carl Sagan at Cornell, and then played a key role in the early 1980s organizing drive to unionize workers at Cornell. She became a skilled labor organizer and was hired by UAW-District 65 to work with Revlon Cosmetics Factory workers who were negotiating a new contract in Phoenix, Arizona. She met her future husband Joaquin in Phoenix.</p>
<p>Carol went on to work as a VISTA Volunteer, taught English as a second language, and coordinated a community garden project for Centro Adelante Campesino, a farm worker community center in Surprise, Arizona. When she completed her VISTA duties she was appointed Director of Organizing for the Arizona Farm Workers Union. In October of 1988 Carol and Joaquin moved back to Central New York where they worked for Cortland County as Social Welfare Examiner Trainees while living at Common Place Land Trust in Truxton. They were active in the struggle to keep the Low-Level Radioactive Waste Dump out of Cortland County.</p>
<p>Carol learned the art of baking bread and became a partner in On The Rise Bakery, a women’s cooperative in Syracuse. Carol and Joaquin went to work at Ithaca High School in 1991. Carol was secretary to the English, Business and Health Departments and coordinated the student peer mediation program. In 1997 they moved to Douglas, Arizona to be near Joaquin’s parents who were having health issues. They worked for the Douglas Unified School District until the year 2000 when they became co-editors of a local weekly newspaper, The Douglas News.</p>
<p>Carol and Joaquin moved back to Truxton in 2006 after his parents died. Carol worked for Madison-Cortland ARC until Ithaca High School hired her and Joaquin. Carol retired in late June 2011from Ithaca City School District after serving as Registrar, Attendance Secretary and Special Education Department Secretary. She was looking forward to enjoying many of her favorite hobbies. She was a Master Gardener, a professional photographer with her pictures on the front of Communities Magazine, she was an avid reader and was proud that as a little girl in Dryden she got her library card and couldn’t wait to read the stack of books she would take home.</p>
<p>Carol loved to dance and sing. She loved to eat berries off the berry bushes on her property and she loved to crochet scarves and catnip mice to give as presents. Carol had a wealth of knowledge about the healing properties of the herbs and plants growing naturally in the fields and woods. She was also a talented interior decorator and landscaper. Carol’s sweet smile will be missed by family and friends.</p>

Howard was born Oct 15, 1924 at Harford, a son of the late Charles and Ida Mix Keech. On Nov. 22, 1945, he was married to the former Nannette Woodard in Richford. Mrs. Keech passed away March 8, 2002. He owned Keech Plumbing and Heating for 65 years. He was a member of the Dryden Ambulance and an Honored Member of Neptune Hose Co. No. 1 of Dryden and served faithfully as an EMT for 20 years He enjoyed attending auctions and collecting antiques. A capable fix-it-man, Howard was a generous neighbor who would help anyone he knew.</p>
<p>Survivors include his son, John (Sharon D.) Keech and his daughter, Sandra (Arthur) Barry all of Dryden; grandchildren, Jason (Felicia) Arnold of Homer, Robin (Katie) Barry of Soldotna, AK, Hannah Barry of Glenmont, NY, Emily Barry of Palmer, AK, Molly (Jose) Rivera of Factoryville, PA, Jamie (Caren) Arnold of Dryden, Julie (Jim) Williams of Groton, Kevan (Andrea) Barry of Scott AFB, IL, Nathan Dunham of Lacona, NY, Michelle (Jason) Farrand of Lacona; several great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Jean Keech of Freeville and Betty Woodard of Smyrna, TN; a special friend, Deb Denman of Moravia; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Robert Arnold and his three brothers, Lawrence, Marion and Robert Keech.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Stuart F. Smith, age 75, died Thursday, January 12, 2012 at his home in Dryden, NY. Stuart Friend Smith was born in Laconia, NH on May 11, 1936, the second child of Royal W. Smith and Verna Friend Smith. After graduation from the University of NH in Durham with a B.S. degree in Animal Husbandry, Stuart moved to Warsaw, NY. He was an assistant county agricultural agent for ten years.</p>
<p>At this job he met and married his wife of 51 years, Kay Wolfe Smith. In 1966 Stuart earned his Masters degree in Agricultural Economics from Cornell University.</p>
<p>In 1968 Stuart moved his growing family from Warsaw to Dryden, NY to take a position at Cornell as a Cooperative Extension specialist in agricultural economics. He traveled throughout the state working with county agricultural agents and farmers sharing his knowledge and wisdom. In addition he spent time planning and conducting Income Tax Schools for tax accountants working on farm tax accounts. Stuart and Kay stayed in Dryden with their 5 children in the same home for the next 43 years.</p>
<p>Stuart was very active in the Dryden United Methodist Church. He held many leadership positions both locally and at the District level. He was a church Lay Leader and Lay Speaker conducting worship services when needed in the Dryden church and other area churches.</p>
<p>In retirement Stuart was able to enjoy his talent for woodworking producing many heirlooms for family and friends Stuart was an avid gardener throughout his life and into his retirement. He shared the fruits of his labor with neighbors and the local Kitchen Cupboard as well as providing his family with abundance. He was often found on the Dryden Lake Golf Course or playing a hand of Bridge. Early in his retirement he was a consultant for Farm Net.</p>
<p>Stuart is survived by his wife Kay; 5 children- Gregory (Diana) Smith of Shelburne, VT, Arlette (Terrance) O’Keefe of Penfield, NY, Christopher (Dana) Smith of Marlborough, CT, Melinda (Greg) Tacconi of Chili, NY and Kimberley (Dwayne) Narayan of Jefferson, MD; and 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers Royal W. Smith Jr. and Richard P. Smith and a sister Barbara Turner.</p>

Lobdell, age 63, of West Dryden Road, Freeville, NY passed away Friday, Jan. 6, 2012 at his residence after a brief illness. “Dick” was born February 14, 1948 in Ithaca, NY, a son of Charlotte Viola Morgan Lobdell of Ithaca and the late Richard Lobdell. On February 12, 1966 he was married to the former Doris Mowers in Dryden. Dick was the owner of R.W. Lobdell Construction and had completed numerous homes and structures in the area. He was a member and Past Chief of the Etna Fire Dept. and enjoyed hunting, stock car racing and casino games, working and spending time with his family.</p>
<p>Survivors include his loving wife, Doris Mowers Lobdell at home, his sons, Tom (Tami) Lobdell and Harold “Hack” (Brandy) Lobdell; his daughter, Tammy (John) Rochford all of Freeville; grandchildren, Tommy, Terry and Ty Lobdell, Sean and Cassandra Ponton, Zachary and Mackenzie Rochford, Morgan, Amber, Tiffany and Harold Lobdell, Jr.; siblings, Robert Lee Lobdell of Freeville and Jerry Allen Lobdell of Ithaca; aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Richard Lobdell, a brother, William Douglas Lobdell and grandchildren, Richard and Tyler Lobdell.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Roland E. Knowlton, age 72, of 172 Stevens Road, Freeville, NY passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at the Cortland Memorial Hospital. Roland was born Oct. 11, 1939 in Owego, NY a son of the late Harry and Marjorie Miner Knowlton. He was graduated from Guilford High School and served in the US Army from 1956 to 1968 retiring as an E6 Staff Sergeant. “Rube” as he was known by his many friends, was married to the former Ilse Guhlke in Switzerland on April 8, 1961. After his military career they settled in Phoenix, AZ where he was employed as the Comptroller for Atco. Later he returned to the East and was employed by various companies until full retirement in 2008. Rube was a member of the DAV and American Legion organizations in Cortland. He was an avid bowler and golfer who enjoyed many outdoor activities.</p>
<p>Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Ilse at home, his children, Reed (Kelly) Knowlton of Littlefield, TX, Raymond (Lisa) Knowlton of Phoenix, AZ and Rene (Glen) Dishmon of Groton; his brother, Carl (Phyllis) Knowlton of Vernon, AZ; his twin brother, Ralph (Debra) Knowlton of Greene, NY and his brother Stephen (Cheri) Knowlton of Norwich, NY; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.</p>
