Katherine Szymanski, 99, of Oak Hill Manor, formerly of Newfield, passed peacefully on January 12, 2010. Katherine was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 28, 1910 to the late Antoni Rasztemborski and Marjanna Staniszewski.

As an infant, Katherine and the Rasztemborski family moved back to Biezun, Poland where she grew up and attended school. In 1939 prior to the outbreak of World War II in Europe, Katherine left Poland and immigrated to the United States as a natural born American citizen and settled in Brooklyn, NY where she met and later married staff sergeant Edward Szymanski of Newfield. Following the conclusion of World War II, Katherine and Edward moved to Newfield to live, work and raise their family.

Katherine was known for her great humor which brought happiness to many lives. She had an abiding love for music, dance and especially bingo.

 Katherine is survived by her son, Edward S. Szymanski and his wife, Lynn of Ithaca; her daughter, Irene Schickel and her husband, Gerald of Chattanooga, TN; her grandchildren, Robert Schickel of Ft. Myers, FL, Elise Goddard (Jeff) of Los Olivos, CA and Katie Underwood (Michael) of Newburyport, MA; four great grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Richard Ross of Interlaken and Stefen Szymanski of Ithaca and numerous nieces and nephews. Katherine was predeceased by her husband, Edward in 1986.


Memorial Information:

 A Prayer Service will be celebrated by Rev. Leo Reinhardt on Monday, January 18, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Bangs Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, January 17, 2010 from 2 to 4 p.m. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Newfield, will be delayed until spring.
