Lennart Krook, of Ithaca, New York, died on April 24, 2010. He was born in
Eksharad, Sweden on August 28, 1924, and earned his D.V.M. and Ph.D. degrees
from the Royal Veterinary College in Stockholm, Sweden. He was associate
professor of pathology at the Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine in
Manhattan, Kansas from 1958-59 and was appointed associate professor of
pathology at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell in 1959. He was
promoted to professor in 1965 and became Emeritus in 1995. He was associate
dean for post-doctoral education at the Veterinary College from 1976-1986
and was especially active in graduate-student education. He was major
advisor to 28 Ph.D. candidates, most of whom had their D.V.M. degrees, and
to 6 M.S. candidates.

He held professional appointments in the division of Nutritional Sciences at
Cornell and in the departments of pathology and radiology at Cornell
University Medical College in New York, NY. He was editor-in-chief of The
Cornell Veterinarian, a peer-reviewed scientific journal, from 1972-1988.

American Society for Nutritional Sciences.

In the mid 1970s, the Mohawk Indians of Cornwall Island, Ontario, Canada
asked Dr. Krook to investigate the progressive and devastating disease in
their cattle, which they suspected was caused by emissions from a nearby
aluminum plant. He provided extensive clinical, post-mortem, and chemical
examinations to show that the causes was fluoride poisoning from industrial
pollution. His findings were the basis for a class-action lawsuits by the
Mohawk against the industry. This experience was followed by several similar
lawsuits in which he always worked for the offended party, and always pro
bono.

Krook is survived by Nancy, his wife of 51 years, his daughters Anne, of
Seattle, Washington, and Anita, of Lansing, NY, Anita’s husband John, and
his grandchildren Elsa and Tomas.
