Roland E. Knowlton, age 72, of 172 Stevens Road, Freeville, NY passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at the Cortland Memorial Hospital. Roland was born Oct. 11, 1939 in Owego, NY a son of the late Harry and Marjorie Miner Knowlton. He was graduated from Guilford High School and served in the US Army from 1956 to 1968 retiring as an E6 Staff Sergeant. “Rube” as he was known by his many friends, was married to the former Ilse Guhlke in Switzerland on April 8, 1961. After his military career they settled in Phoenix, AZ where he was employed as the Comptroller for Atco. Later he returned to the East and was employed by various companies until full retirement in 2008. Rube was a member of the DAV and American Legion organizations in Cortland. He was an avid bowler and golfer who enjoyed many outdoor activities.
Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Ilse at home, his children, Reed (Kelly) Knowlton of Littlefield, TX, Raymond (Lisa) Knowlton of Phoenix, AZ and Rene (Glen) Dishmon of Groton; his brother, Carl (Phyllis) Knowlton of Vernon, AZ; his twin brother, Ralph (Debra) Knowlton of Greene, NY and his brother Stephen (Cheri) Knowlton of Norwich, NY; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services will be held at 3 PM Monday, Jan. 9th, 2012 at the Perkins Funeral Home with Pastor Ronald Miller officiating.
